Retrospective on the Lax Report: Four Decades of Progress in High-Performance Computing

The Randles Lab is pleased to announce the publication of "Retrospective on the Lax Report: Then and Now" in IEEE Computing in Science & Engineering. Co-authored by Amanda Randles alongside HPC leaders Ewa Deelman, Jack Dongarra, Bruce Hendrickson, Daniel Reed, Edward Seidel, and Katherine Yelick, the article reflects on the enduring impact of the landmark 1982 Lax Report and examines the opportunities and challenges facing high-performance computing over the next four decades.

The perspective discusses the evolution of HPC from centralized supercomputers to today's AI-enabled, cloud-augmented computing ecosystem, while emphasizing the continued importance of sustained investment in scientific software, hardware-software co-design, workforce development, and computational science infrastructure. The article also highlights biomedical simulation—including the Randles Lab's HARVEY blood flow solver—as an example of how leadership-class computing is enabling new advances in precision medicine and vascular digital twins.
