Randles Lab Biomedical Engineering PhD student Guinevere Ferreira presented her latest research on cardiovascular digital twins at the 2026 IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) Annual International Conference (EMBC).

Making cardiovascular digital twins practical for real-world clinical care requires moving beyond reliance on invasive pressure measurements. Ferreira’s work addresses this challenge through a novel pressure-scaling framework that couples one-dimensional (1D) and three-dimensional (3D) cardiovascular models to recover clinically meaningful pressures in patient-specific simulations.

The approach is designed to make high-fidelity cardiovascular digital twins more scalable and applicable when direct pressure measurements are unavailable. By connecting efficient reduced-order modeling with detailed 3D hemodynamic simulation, the work advances the lab’s broader efforts to develop digital twins capable of supporting longitudinal cardiovascular monitoring and hemodynamic biomarker discovery.

The research represents another step toward translating patient-specific computational modeling from individual clinical snapshots to scalable tools for understanding how cardiovascular physiology changes over time.
